New steel garage roof
A steel roof is the most common replacement for an old cement sheet roof: light, long-lasting and quick to fit. If your garage roof is not asbestos, or the old one has already been removed, this is the simple version of the job.
Why steel
Pre-coated steel box profile sheets weigh very little, so they are kind to older garage timbers. They need little maintenance, shed water quickly and are available in a few colours. A well-fitted steel roof is also fast to install, which keeps the garage open to the weather for as little time as possible.
What affects the job
The size and pitch of the garage, the condition of the timbers and fixings, access, and whether you want insulation or an anti-condensation backing. Fascias, guttering and flashings at the wall are often replaced at the same time.
Old timbers that have been damp for years are the usual surprise. A good roofer checks them before sheeting over and tells you what needs replacing.
Is the old roof asbestos?
If the garage was built before 2000 and has corrugated cement-looking sheets, treat the roof as possibly asbestos until it has been tested. Do not drill, cut or break the sheets to find out. If it is asbestos, the new roof needs the old one removed first, and the steps are on the removal pages.
